Kathryn Gray has been named the new executive director of the San Diego Press Club, following the retirement of Terry Wiliams, the club announced. Williams steps down after 20 years of dedicated service to the Press Club.

Gray, who most recently completed coursework in digital journalism at San Diego City College and is working as an intern at Voice of San Diego, comes to the position with years of experience working with for-profit and non-profit organizations in San Francisco and Washington D.C.

“I have had the pleasure of working alongside Kathryn for more than two years, and she is the perfect fit for this position,” Press Club board president Nicole Vargas said. “Kathryn is a proven leader, an exceptional collaborator and passionate about our industry. She appreciates and respects the history of the Press Club and the tireless work Terry has done, and she has the vision and skillset to continue that into the future.”

Originally from San Diego, Gray has a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara in Global Studies and Spanish. She is an avid explorer and has lived in Ecuador, Spain and Chile and traveled extensively in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and The Middle East.

As a new journalist, Gray said she relied on invaluable resources and mentorship from the San Diego Press Club to navigate the field. Gray is thrilled to be back in her hometown and working in the industry. “It was a big decision and a huge step for me, deciding to retire,” outgoing Executive Director Terry Williams said. “Kathryn is the perfect choice, and the club is in excellent hands. I could not be more pleased.”

Williams will remain in an advisory capacity through the 50th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards, which will be held in October 3 in Balboa Park’s International Houses.
